Shining a Spotlight on Mental Health

Released on 6 October 2017

As the national debate on funding our public services continues in conference centres around the country this autumn, it seems clear to me that a new approach is needed.  It is good to see that at local level we are responding to the mental health crisis and not waiting for a golden egg to be laid.

I was therefore delighted last night, to participate in ARM’s ‘Spotlight Live’ at the Cambridge Corn Exchange to celebrate and facilitate Cambridge’s rich and varied voluntary and third sector working in the field of young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

Simon Humphrey, Corporate Responsibility Manager at ARM has worked with a number of Cambridge based charities, including the excellent The Kite Trust, to bring together a new more collaborative approach to addressing this complex and sensitive topic.  With the wonderfully rambling wit of Mark Watson, the insight of child specialists, the moving organic composition of new music with members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the courageous clarity of young people, the Spotlight did indeed shine brightly.

I look forward to seeing how Cambridge can pioneer a new approach that puts the young person’s need at the centre of provision.
